Today we return to Examine.com and another meta analysis that should be so obvious that you’ll simply yawn as a response. While the results were self-evident, the so-called “researchers” failed to explain why, so let’s fix that as it’s very simple biochemistry.
Quick Summary
“This meta-analysis of 15 case-control studies involving 23,552 participants investigated long-term mouthwash use and a possible association with an increased risk of developing oral cancer.”
Before you even look at the statistics, all you need to do to get a clear picture is to ask the very simple question of “what are the most common ingredients in commercial mouthwash products?” and then follow up with, “what are the established and documented effects on the human body, especially our tissues, from exposure to these compounds?”
Well, the most common ingredients in mouthwash include solvents, anti-bacterial compounds, sweeteners, preservatives, colorants, and flavoring agents. Sweeteners, often alongside glycerine (solvent,) are present in 96.7% of mouthwashes, with saccharin, sorbitol, and xylitol being the most common types.
Preservatives are found in 82.2% of mouthwashes, with sodium benzoate being the predominant type. Colorants are added to 66% of mouthwashes, while flavoring agents are included in 99.2%.
Active ingredients that are frequently found in therapeutic mouthwash include peroxide, fluoride, essential oils, and chlorhexidine (anti-bacterial and highly toxic and damaging compounds.)
Fluoride compounds, such as sodium fluoride, are present in 86.9% of aqueous solutions or concentrates (extremely toxic causing a lot of damage and toxic build-up in tissues.)

Do you think these “researchers” had the brain capacity to put forth these questions? Nah, not likely. And neither did the incompetent staff at Examine.com.
Key study details
“This study analyzed mouthwash use based on type (with and without alcohol), duration (long-term use for over 40 years), and frequency (less than once daily, once or twice daily, and three or more times daily).”
I never understood why someone would rinse their mouth with a toxic cocktail of chemicals. It’s just as stupid as using commercial toothpaste. However, using it three or more times daily is simply a new level of retardness. That’s just insane.
If you have a problem with oral health and bad breath, perhaps you should look at your diet and remove all processed and plant-based foods, especially those with carbohydrates and seed oils? Common sense, you know…
Considering the ingredients found in most mouthwash products, doing it a few times a week or perhaps once daily will cause some tissue damage, but likely not enough to cause the body to protect itself by developing cancer — unless you’re very unhealthy to begin with, as in having several nutrient deficiencies and thus not be able to heal properly. But twice or three times a day? That’s just asking for it.
“Although mouthwash use was not associated with a higher risk of oral cancer overall, the participants who had used mouthwash for more than 40 years had a 44% higher risk of developing oral cancer. Moreover, the participants who used it three or more times daily had a 158% higher risk, but there was no association in the participants who used it once or twice daily.”
The claim that “mouthwash use was not associated with a higher risk of oral cancer overall,” simply means that if you sporadically use it, as in a few times a week, there is no documented risk. However, we already know that the chemicals in these products cause tissue damage, so it’s all about the accumulated damage and toxicity in your body, as in what else you expose yourself to, and what you eat.
And, as predicted, the participants who used it three or more times daily had a 158% higher risk while those using it for more than 40 years, independent of frequency, had a 44% higher risk, due to repeated exposure and damage (and likely toxic accumulation.)
As for mouthwash with alcohol, ethanol is known to be a carcinogen and can cause deeper-layer cell damage, increasing the risk of malignant transformation in order for the cells to protect themselves against the very potent poison.

Other ingredients like phenolic compounds, triclosan, cetylpyridinium chloride, and chlorhexidine may also contribute to cell damage and even worse, they kill all kind of bacteria, thus altering the diversity of oral bacteria, potentially increasing the risk of oral cancer as bacteria is needed for removal of damaged cells and debris, as bacteria aid in the healing and repair process of tissues.
Also, glycerine that is used as a “moisturizer” is also anti-bacterial, which is very bad if combined with other chemicals that damages tissues as bacteria is needed for the healing and repair process.

Additionally, essential oils such as eucalyptol, menthol, and methyl salicylate, which are often used in mouthwashes, are very toxic to skin cells and especially the squamous epithelial cells of the mouth, which are similar to the cells found in the outer layer of the skin.

Now, add these ingredients together and the accumulated damage will be quite high. While there will be damage and the possibility of toxic accumulation in mouth tissues every time you use a mouthwash, whether your body is eventually forced to mutate and protect the exposed cells, as in developing oral cancer, solely depends on all other stressors imposed on the body as well as the length of the repeated exposure. This is the case for all kinds of toxic induced damage. For some people, they will develop other kinds of ailments long before they develop oral cancer, while others might develop oral cancer before other parts of their body start to fail. It all depends on the largest toxic offenders and stressors. If someone consumes a lot of carbohydrates/sugars and seed oils while also using mouthwash daily, it’s more likely that he or she will die of cardiovascular disease before they begin to develop oral cancer from using mouthwash. It’s all about different kinds of toxic exposure, and the most crucial piece of that puzzle is always the diet.
Examine.com’s take
“Although general mouthwash use does not appear to raise oral cancer risk, frequent use may be a concern in the long term. However, because this study relies on observational data, it cannot prove that mouthwash use directly causes oral cancer.”
Again, the staff at Examine.com is totally ignorant of simple biochemistry and common sense. If you expose your body to certain toxins repeatedly, there will be damage, and depending on other factors as previously discussed, you might eventually develop cancer as a last chance of survival, as in protecting these tissues or to shield off accumulated toxins into tumors, to stop them from doing more serious damage.
With that said, simply focusing on the “worst outcome” as in “oral cancer” is extremely stupid. Instead we need to recognize that these products cause damage every time you use them, and that damage will accumulate if your body can’t heal in between exposures.
And even if your body can heal, there will eventually be formation of scar tissue and toxic residues, especially since mouthwashes kill bacteria, bacteria that are needed as our “clean-up crew” during healing processes. If there is not enough bacteria present when damaged tissue is being repaired, the healing can never be completed and there will be a lot of debris and toxic compounds present that will interfere and might even get stuck in the tissues — hence the increased risk of developing oral cancer. All this is common sense. Unfortunately it seems to go below the radar for most people within the “healthcare” and “scientific” community, as they are severely dumbed-down and indoctrinated by their abysmal and backwards education.
