Thanks to Héctor Cabrera, the developer of the excellent WordPress Popular Posts (WPP,) the Trending Posts feature now seems to be working as intended. The culprit was the W3 Total Cache, who after an auto-update seem to be too aggressive. I did some changes to the settings, as recommended by Héctor, and it seems to have done the trick.
